38. What about the last tape?             ‘But that’s awful,’ Katarina cried out. Not that she was Charles’s best friend. But such a death, she wouldn’t wish on anyone. ‘Do they know who has done it? Have they captured the killer?’             Frau Bertha shook her head. ‘No, my contact in France says that they even have no suspect in mind. It’s all very mysterious. It has to be a burglar who had set his mind on the content of the locker because it stood wide open.’             Jean-Pierre and Katarina looked at each other. ‘What has disappeared out of the locker?’ Jean-Pierre asked with a trembling voice. Both he and his girlfriend thought the same thing and he feared that their German hostess would confirm their suspicion.             ‘I’ve asked my contact if there was a tape in the locker. He had to deny. There were some paper bonds and a little bundle of money inside of it, but the burglar didn’t pick them. We can assume with reasonable dou

37. A warm and cold shower             ‘Let me contact Charles first. I explain the situation in my own way. With the right approach, I surely get him on our side.’             After these last emphasized words, Katarina knew they had found a strong ally. The situation literally had overtaken her and she really didn’t know what to do now.             ‘Thank you, Frau Bertha. I won’t forget this. You’re a genuine friend of my mother… and of us too, isn’t she, Jean-Pierre?’             Jean-Pierre nodded. He too was happy to welcome her on his side. Considering the men who worked for her and the security around the villa, they could throw their full weight into the scales concerning this matter.             ‘It goes without saying you’re my guests. I’ll give you the best guestroom. If there something you want just call the 9 with the internal telephone and the chambermaid will look for it. We eat about eight o’clock. I suppose you are already a

Stephen grinnikte even.

36. Friend or enemy?             After a quarter of an hour, Katarina and Jean-Pierre heard footsteps approaching. The door was unlocked and Frau Hofmeister entered the room. She looked very stern and whispered something to the young man who was accompanying her. It was the man who had welcomed them at the villa with his two friends. Those two weren’t with him now.             ‘Frau Hofmeister, let me…,’ Katarina immediately tried to tell her story but was stopped by an angry voice.             ‘Schweigen Sie bitte! Be silent, please! I don’t want to repeat this. You just answer when you’re asked. Understood?’ Frau Hofmeister didn’t sound as the friendly, fond of laughing woman anymore Jean-Pierre had met at Chateau Dauphin. Her eyes were full of fire and her lips pressed together in anger.             ‘I’ve received a very troubling phone call from Monsieur Charles. I probably don’t have to explain what he has told me.’             Both Kat

35. German reliability             They were picked up with a black Mercedes. German reliability before everything, Jean-Pierre thought. The chauffeur stood with a little signboard at the airport so that they could see he had gotten orders to drive them to Frau Bertha. It was a tight-lipped man. Either he couldn’t speak English, French or any language Katarina and her companion tried on him or he had received the command not to talk to them.             Katarina stayed impassive under it. She had other things to think about than making small talk with a German driver. When they left the neighborhood of Berlin-Tegel Airport, Jean-Pierre noticed the driver had locked the doors automatically from the car’s steering wheel. Probably for security measures he reacted spontaneously. Those Germans saw conspiracies and danger everywhere. They enjoyed the view along their route.             ‘Let me do the talking, Jean-Pierre. Frau Hofmeister knows me for a

Can I still stay for a moment?

Shy, I come closer, Feeling guilty I invade your world Or what is left of it. A bed, A chair, A wardrobe. The sheets pale as your face, Your hands wrinkled, Diaphanous as a parchment, Your veins draw a map The roads you have travelled, Full of potholes and falling, Hoping against hope, Rising             Up                         Again                                                            Now,                         Not Anymore There is a haze laying upon your eyes, An image of the other side, A sea full of waving corn, Light as yellow And ripe as the sun that is sowed, As milk, fresh from the cow’s udder. A day to harvest. I know, without you saying it, I can read it In the tears on your cheek, I can hear it In the breath on your trembling lips. It’s high time to go, But I don’t want to leave, Not yet. Can I still stay for a moment? You want to ask me. All I ca
