41. The Carlton Paris             The rest was child play. They had put the sleeping Madame Dupont inside the van. Katarina was looking for it that everyone handled her carefully. After the hard interrogation, with success, it’s true, she had felt a little guilty. She knew the lady in that matter had a predilection for the minister on the tape, but that didn’t mean she was bad.             Helmut and Jean-Pierre had gotten her again in her bedroom without effort, where she could sleep till the anesthetic was worked out. Jean-Pierre didn’t doubt that he would find the tape inside her night table. Katarina had played a masterpiece. He himself would have been brought to his knees by such an interrogation. Without any trouble, he found the third tape under a book the lady probably was reading in her bed before sleeping.     ...

Hankering after the reality stoically, I feast upon the fantasy, my slowly running dry well of memories sometimes it’s only just an appraisal of what I never will be able to taste, stolen glances of intimacy, words that I read and project, echoes of what I hear which fling back inside my head as ricochets, make more damage than one well-aimed shot, I see distorted pictures in the fragments that remain, shadows that once belonged to the light, to a person who is flesh and blood who lives and loves caresses and kisses the peace I know comes from resignation knowing that the other side of the world, even if it’s green or dark, a land of sea and new as in birth, as in discovering will be forever unknown to me. © Rudi J.P. .....             Toen ze beiden na de thee bij Gekko aankwamen was iedereen al present. Stephen en ik die blijkbaar goed met elkaar konden opschieten, zaten naast elkaar wat te keuvelen over ditjes en datjes. Gekko was druk in de weer zoals altijd met zijn schermen en andere apparatuur die voor hem geen geheimen kenden.             ‘En…geluk gehad bij het Chashitsu Tuyan?’ vroeg ik terstond aan Ji. Ik las direct de teleurstelling van hun gezicht. ‘Dus niets,’ antwoordde ik in hun plaats.             Eagle Eye schokschouderde.‘Voorlopig niets. Volgende week komt de dienster terug uit verlof en kan die ons misschien wat meer vertellen over onze mysterieuze theedrinker. Als ze het haar nog maar kan herinneren. Er komt daar nogal veel volk over de vloer.’ Eagle Eye plofte zich in een van de zetels van Gekko dat ik even dacht...

40. The interrogation             Frau Bertha had spared neither cost nor effort so that this undertaking should succeed. Katarina was very grateful for it. ‘You’re a real friend, Bertha, I’ll never forget you helped my mother and me.’ She took the German woman close and kissed her amicable on the cheek.             ‘Oh, my child, it’s the least I can do, after all, what’s old friends for? But let us get ready to interrogate Thérèse. Our men can arrive here any moment. Do you have your device with you?’             Bertha had provided for a headset microphone that was connected with a transformer. 28             Ik had Stephen een rondleiding in mijn appartement gegeven. Gelukkig had de logeerkamer een aparte, wel wat kleinere badkamer, zodanig dat we zonder elkaar te storen de nacht konden doorbrengen. We namen nog een slaapmutsje vooraleer we onder de wol gingen.             ‘Bedankt Yu, ik waardeer het echt dat ik hier bij jou mag overnachten.’ Het klonk vermoeid maar gemeend uit de mond van Stephen. ‘Het is de laatste dagen qua emoties wat veel geweest en…nou ja, ik zou me niet op mijn gemak gevoeld hebben in het Oji. Alleen al met die waarschuwingen aan mijn adres.’ Hij zuchtte even, ‘ik ben niet bang aangelegd en kan mijn mannetje wel staan, maar we hebben hier niet te maken met een of andere herrieschopper die ik met een paar rake meppen tot andere gedachten kan brengen. 39. Père Lachaise Cemetery             Katarina had specified one condition. She wanted to be there when Madame Thérèse would be interrogated. She had every confidence in Frau Bertha but not in the man the German woman had chosen to execute the abduction.             Helmut had blond hair and sky blue eyes and a body that was fully trained. It was his laugh, she didn’t like. She saw it didn’t reach his eyes and her knowledge of the human nature told her that this German Adonis in reality was as cold as ice and would not withdraw from anything. Even if you couldn’t call their plan for this abduction legal, Katarina didn’t want Madame Dupont hurt.
