Daybreak

On barefoot yet before the day
dressed up in dew and greet the grass
of gold and diamonds full, the tree
with rainbows upon and around

the sand spinning out in grains
on my instep there’s a bit of daybreak
and crusts from the night before

through my ear sounds the corn
the singing of the stalks
it’s the magpie that steals the light
and is screeching in his flight
of a whole new start.
